If a vacancy says “ADR required”, do not immediately buy a course. Clarify the cargo, transport method and duties the employer means. The general label “ADR course” may refer to initial training, a specialist module or refresher training for an existing certificate.
This article helps with course selection and document checks. It is not an instruction manual for classifying, loading or transporting dangerous goods, or responding to emergencies. Establish the requirements for a particular transport with the company's competent specialist, the training provider and the official rules.
Clarify the job duties first
Ask the employer three questions: what transport is planned, what scope of ADR certification is required, and who will check your existing certificate? Do not settle for the cargo's everyday trade name; it may cover different products and transport conditions.
This does not mean you should carry out the technical classification yourself. Your aim is to obtain verified employer requirements for choosing a course. Identify a package for the planned work rather than asking for a course that supposedly allows every cargo.
If you have no vacancy yet, define the area you want to enter. An extra module may be useful later, but does not guarantee employment or higher pay. Relate the cost to your own plan rather than a general advertising promise of earnings.
How do the courses fit together?
IHK Frankfurt's explanation of the training system distinguishes the basic course from the Tank, Class 1 and Class 7 additional courses. Specialist modules build on basic training. A single course title must not be treated as permission for every transport task.

This table is an initial selection aid, not a complete classification authorising transport. Do not determine quantities, vehicle types or exemptions from a blog table. Show the employer's written requirements to the provider to identify differing interpretations early.
Check the training provider and package contents
Check recognition for the relevant course with the responsible IHK. A logo or a certificate image on social media is insufficient evidence. Obtain the full course name, organisation, address, dates and examination process in writing.
Break the offer into tuition, materials, practical elements, examination fees and certificate issue. Ask how retests and date changes are charged. Find out any exclusions from an “all-inclusive” package before paying.
Clarify the course language and examination conditions. Access to an interpreter for advice does not mean interpreters are allowed in the exam. If technical terms are difficult, discuss advance preparation; do not rely on promises based only on memorising questions.
Course completion and certificate readiness are separate stages
Separate enrolment, attendance, passing the examination and receiving the certificate. IHK links ADR certification to recognised training and a successful examination. Do not list a simple attendance slip as a completed ADR certificate on your CV.
When an employer asks for a start date, state which stage is confirmed. An exam date does not guarantee a pass or card issue. Agree in advance who checks the scope and validity of the final certificate.
Track renewal deadlines separately
IHK Frankfurt's page on validity explains the five-year period based on the date the basic-course examination is passed. A later specialist course does not restart that period. Plan the appropriate refresher training and examination before the certificate expires.
Put the expiry date in your calendar and ask about course places early. The official page explains renewal within the 12 months before expiry. Use that window instead of waiting until the last day, and confirm the precise procedure with IHK.

Illustrative example: avoiding the wrong package
Bekzod sees “ADR erwünscht” in a vacancy and does not immediately choose the largest package. He asks whether ADR is mandatory or preferred, what scope is needed, and whether training is offered after employment begins.
He then checks the requirements with the provider. One offer includes tuition only; another also includes the exam. He records package contents and extra costs. The fictional example is about comparing equivalent services, not simply choosing the cheapest course.
Questions and answers
Is ADR required for every truck-driving job?
Check the vacancy and the particular transport requirements. ADR is not a universal document for every driver. Equally, a situation that does not require a certificate may still require instruction or training.
Does ADR replace CE or FQN?
