CE, FQN and Fahrerkarte may appear together in a truck-driving vacancy, but they are not three names for one permission. CE concerns driving entitlement, FQN professional qualification, and Fahrerkarte personal tachograph records. “I have driving documents” is not enough to assess readiness to work.

This guide helps organise documents and ask the employer useful questions. It does not confirm recognition of your licence in Germany or entitlement to drive a particular vehicle. That requires checking issuing country, category, validity, restrictions and individual status.

Separate the functions of the three documents

Document or labelMain functionWhat does it not replace?
Driving licence showing category CEEvidence of entitlement to drive that vehicle categoryProfessional qualification and permission to work
FQN: FahrerqualifizierungsnachweisEvidence of professional driver qualificationDriving licence and tachograph card
FahrerkarteCard for driver-specific digital tachograph recordsDriving entitlement and professional qualification

The table is a brief sorting guide. Requirements and exemptions depend on the actual commercial operation. A friend working “with the same card” does not prove your status; their licence, experience or authorisation may differ.

Is the CE label enough?

Besides checking CE, establish the issuing country and applicable German procedure. Familiar letters on a foreign licence do not automatically make it equivalent to a German one. Review both sides, category dates and additional codes.

The official Make it in Germany portal lists the appropriate EU/EEA driving licence and initial professional qualification as separate conditions. Routes to obtain missing documents may exist, but a planned document is not one you already hold.

Instead of “I have CE”, say “My Uzbek licence includes CE; its German conversion status has not yet been clarified.” This accurately describes your preparation stage rather than hiding a gap.

What do FQN and “95” mean?

FQN is evidence of professional driver qualification. Section 7 BKrFQG provides for the competent authority to issue evidence on application of initial qualification, accelerated initial qualification or prescribed periodic training. It also covers certain other equivalent evidence; have each document checked by its precise name.

“Code 95” in an advert does not mean an ordinary attendance paper is enough. Clarify the evidence required, categories covered and validity of your document. Keep course certificates, exam results and authority-issued qualification evidence separate.

If you worked in another country, disclose existing evidence and do not ignore expiry. Before buying a new course, clarify how previous qualification is recognised; this may avoid unnecessary work.

Why is the Fahrerkarte separate?

The Fahrerkarte records driver-related data in a digital tachograph. It is not a driving licence and grants no missing category or qualification. Its issue does not mean all other employer checks are complete.

Baden-Württemberg’s official service page explains that the card is personal and may not be used by anyone else. Learn its use through the company’s relevant training. “Temporarily” using another driver’s card is not a solution.

First issue, renewal and loss involve different applications. Declare any card already issued abroad. Do not confuse waiting for a first card with replacing a lost one, or assume you can start driving.

Create a document inventory

List document name, issuing country, category, validity, current status and checking contact. Use precise statuses such as “original held”, “application submitted” or “course only planned”. “In progress” alone does not show the next step.

Add one open question per row: licence conversion, accepted FQN evidence, or the driver-card authority and application method. Put date and document type in filenames to distinguish old and new versions.

Do not post personal document numbers in public CVs or groups. Type and status may suffice initially. If an original is needed, clarify who will see it, for what purpose and through which protected channel.

Illustrative example: three ticks do not prove readiness

Suppose Bahrom has a foreign CE licence, course-completion paper and Fahrerkarte. He assumes he can start immediately. Review reveals that German licence status is unclear and the course paper has not been confirmed as the required qualification evidence.

He separates “document exists” from “sufficient for this role” in his table. He discusses outstanding checks and possible interim duties with the employer. The fictional example does not imply every holder of such a card has a problem.

Remember immigration and employment checks

These three documents do not replace immigration permission to work. Contract, authorised duties and starting conditions must also align. The guide to moving for work helps with general planning; verify individual entitlement with the competent authority.

If you contact the commercial driver service LKW Fahrer Direkt, start with a document inventory. Contacting a service does not guarantee a job, documents or visa.

Questions and answers

Does one document’s validity apply to the others?

No. Record validity separately for each document and relevant category. The latest date is not the expiry of the whole folder. Renewal authorities may also differ.

If I paid for a course, can I claim the qualification on my CV?

No. Enrolment, passing an exam and receiving the document are different stages. State only what has actually happened.

Is the employer’s check enough?

The employer performs its own checks but does not replace an authority’s decision. Clarify uncertain licence or qualification status with the competent office. Do not start driving based on a verbal “no problem”.
