What a Schengen visa offers

Main requirements

- Completed application form: complete the Schengen visa application using the online or paper form specified by the consulate.
- Health insurance: a policy valid in the Schengen area with at least €30,000 cover for emergency medical care, hospitalisation and repatriation. Check its dates and conditions.
- Purpose of travel: accommodation reservations or an invitation, your itinerary and transport documents, plus evidence of your finances and intention to return after the visit.
- Proof of funding: bank statements or accepted sponsorship documents showing that travel and living costs can be covered.
Application stages
- Choosing the consulate: apply to the consulate of your main destination. For several countries, consider the main purpose or longest stay; if stays are equal and no main destination can be identified, use the country of first entry.
- Submitting documents: prepare the application form, photograph, passport, insurance, financial evidence and itinerary using the consulate's current checklist. Additional evidence may be requested.
- Interview: the mission may invite you to an interview if necessary.
- Wait for the decision: if approved, check the issued visa and its conditions. If refused, read the reasons and legal remedy information in the decision; a new application may also be possible after addressing the shortcomings.
