Comparing insurance offers only by their daily price is not enough. Even policies for the same period can differ in their permitted purpose of stay, cover, exclusions and reimbursement process. A cheap product that does not cover your situation fails to solve the main problem.

These questions help you understand a health policy offered for travel or relocation to Germany. They are not a recommendation of a particular product. A simple travel policy does not resolve the question of membership in regular statutory or private health insurance. Check your situation with the insurer and, if needed, an independent adviser.

1. Does the product suit my purpose of stay?

Tell the insurer where you are coming from, why and for how long. The period before starting work, a language course, study and a short trip may be treated differently. Do not change the purpose on the application to obtain a cheaper price.

The official health insurance guide explains that the type of cover depends on your purpose of residence. An advertising label saying “for Germany” does not prove suitability for your status. Obtain the full product name and the terms applicable to you in writing.

2. On what date and under what conditions does cover start?

Do not assume payment, policy issue and the start of cover happen on the same date. Ask whether travel has already begun, whether the contract must be arranged beforehand and whether there is a waiting period. Also check what happens if the entry date changes.

Check the end date too. Look for exact days rather than “one month”. Compare both insurance confirmations to avoid a gap before the next policy starts. Do not leave an extension until the last day without first knowing whether it is possible.

3. Which territories and people are covered?

For transit or travel outside Germany, ask about territorial cover. Do not broaden a general description such as “Europe” yourself. A temporary return to your country of permanent residence may also be treated differently.

Check names and cover separately for family members. A document issued for one person does not necessarily insure the whole family. For age- or status-dependent terms, obtain an answer based on the actual details in your application.

4. What benefits and exclusions apply?

Distinguish doctor visits, hospital care, medication, dental treatment and other needs. A large overall advertised limit does not mean every service is unrestricted. Identify the relevant clause for each important need.

For pre-existing conditions or planned treatment, clarify the terms honestly through a secure channel. Instead of a verbal “everything is covered”, ask for the contractual basis. Do not make health decisions from a blog or delay necessary care over an insurance question.

5. How is my own share calculated?

If there is a deductible or excess, find out whether it applies per event, service or period. A percentage, fixed amount and maximum cap are different things. An excluded service may involve costs beyond your normal contribution.

Ask the insurer for an illustrative calculation: if a particular cost arose, how would each part be calculated? This explains the terms; it does not guarantee a future payment. Make clear that the example assumes an event covered by the policy.

6. Whom do I contact when I need help?

Know the contact number, service language and channel for non-urgent questions. Ask when prior approval or documents are required. In a medical emergency, do not rely on waiting for a routine email reply.

Must you pay the doctor’s bill first, or is another process used? Direct billing and later reimbursement affect how much cash you need available. Compare the seller’s convenient description with the contractual procedure.

7. What evidence is needed for reimbursement?

Obtain the requirements for invoices, payment evidence, medical documents and claim forms. Are originals required or are electronic copies sufficient? Check submission deadlines and how to track the claim.

Do not send personal data to a random messaging contact. Verify the official document submission channel. Distinguish files sent, a claim received and a claim approved; keep receipts organised until the outcome is known.

8. What if dates, plans or employment change?

Ask about cancelled or delayed travel and regular insurance starting earlier. Cancellation, amendment and refunds are different rights. Find out the conditions for each; do not rely on a blanket refund promise.

Illustrative example: comparing two offers on equal terms

In a fictional example, Malika considers two policies. The first is cheaper, but its suitability for her stay before employment is unclear. The second clearly covers that purpose, but its deductible calculation remains unresolved. She does not choose immediately.

Malika sends both insurers the same profile and questions. She does not enter zero for unknown values. Once replies arrive, she compares prices only among suitable options. The lesson is not that expensive insurance is better: suitability comes before price.

To preserve the discussion’s outcome, Malika records the offer date, product name and version of the terms. If a different name or set of terms appears at purchase, she does not automatically apply the old answer. She verifies that she is buying the product actually discussed. This small check prevents confusion between different packages under one brand.

Questions and answers

If a policy is accepted with my application, is every cost covered?

No. Accepting a document and covering an insured event are different matters. Still read the terms and exclusions. Obtain a precise explanation from the insurer for the particular situation.

What if the advertising page differs from the terms?

Point out the difference in writing and request clarification. Do not pick the most favourable phrase and ignore the rest. Before paying, know which document and version apply to your contract.

How do I include this in my travel plan?

The process of moving for workshould be checked against your insurance dates. If the purpose of stay or dates change, include a fresh insurance review in your plan.
