An employment contract does not mean that all medical expenses are automatically covered from your first day in Germany. Arrival, the start of employment and the start of regular health insurance may fall on different dates. The key question is: who provides cover on each day, under which contract and to what extent?
This article helps you compare periods and obtain written confirmation. It does not personally recommend a particular insurance product or cover every policy exclusion. Check your choice against your purpose of residence, health needs, official requirements and the insurer’s terms.
Put three dates on one timeline
The first date is your actual arrival in Germany. The second is the start of employment. The third is the start of the relevant regular health insurance cover. Do not infer the third date from the employment contract alone; confirm it with the insurer and, if necessary, HR.
The Make it in Germany health insurance page emphasises uninterrupted insurance between arrival and the start of regular cover. The portal recommends checking travel health insurance for the transition period and the requirements of the relevant German mission in advance. This does not mean that every travel policy suits every reason for relocating.
The application date, payment date or date a card was ordered is not a substitute for the cover start date. Find out what makes the contract take effect. Obtain a written answer with an exact date.
Assign evidence and a contact to each period
| Period | What to check | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Travel and arrival | Territory and start conditions | Policy and terms |
| Days before employment | Cover suited to your purpose of residence | Insurer’s confirmation |
| Start of regular insurance | Exact date and status | Membership or coverage confirmation |
| When a date changes | Will there be a gap in cover? | Updated written response |
This table does not automatically determine which insurance to buy. It makes unknown periods visible. Instead of leaving a blank cell because “the employer will sort it out later”, record whom to ask and when you need an answer.
Overlapping dates on two policies do not prove that every need is covered. Both may contain the same exclusion. After checking dates, read the scope of cover too.
Distinguish visa evidence from actual cover
Which document the mission requires and which events the insurer covers are related but different questions. Including a policy in an application does not mean all treatment costs are covered. Check the product’s official name, the insured person and the period.
Tell the insurer your actual purpose of stay: a short tourist trip, a relocation period before work starts, or another situation. Do not select an unsuitable purpose just to obtain a lower price. This may later cause problems over the contract’s scope.
For pre-existing conditions, planned treatment or regular medication, ask about your individual cover. Do not post health information in public groups; use the insurer’s or professional’s secure channel. Do not delay necessary medical care because of this article.
If the work date changes, check the policy too
A postponed start date does not automatically extend insurance. Tell the insurer the new date and ask what can be changed. Terms may depend on advance notice, location or whether travel has begun; do not assume changes are always possible.
Before cancelling an old policy, ensure the new cover is confirmed. Check refund conditions separately. Knowing the new employment date does not mean a new insurance contract has taken effect.
Example request to HR: “Bitte bestätigen Sie meinen tatsächlichen Beschäftigungsbeginn. Welche Angaben benötigen Sie für die Anmeldung zur Krankenversicherung?” This asks for your actual employment start date and the information needed for health insurance registration. Also confirm the precise insurance status with the insurer.
Illustrative example: days between arrival and work
In a fictional example, Murod arrives on 3 October and is due to start work on 14 October. Assume regular cover is also confirmed to start on 14 October. Suitable cover for 3–13 October therefore needs a separate check.
Work is then postponed to 21 October. Murod does not stop at “I already bought a policy”: he reconfirms the new coverage date and obtains an answer for 14–20 October. He asks the insurer whether the existing policy can be changed or another solution is needed.
The dates only illustrate a possible gap. They do not determine which system or policy applies to a real applicant. Once the period is identified, also check that the product and its terms fit the person’s residence situation.
Do not confuse waiting for a card with being uninsured
The date the physical card arrives need not be the coverage start date. If it has not arrived, ask the insurer about your status and any alternative evidence. Equally, ordering a card does not prove that cover has begun.
Find out in advance where to seek treatment and how billing works. In an emergency, do not wait for a routine email reply from the insurer. Keep a note of what to show the clinic and how to contact the insurer.
Final check before departure
Compare the name, date of birth, territory and policy period with your documents. Keep offline copies of the terms, contact number and payment evidence. Repeat the check if travel dates change.
The process of moving to Germany for work should be tracked alongside your insurance timeline. When assessing a policy, the contract and the insurer’s written answer matter more than an advertising headline.
Questions and answers
Can I ignore a one-day gap?
Treat a gap as a planning problem and resolve it in advance. A short period does not guarantee that no medical event will occur. Agree suitable continuous cover with the insurer.
Are my family members automatically covered too?
Do not assume so. Confirm each person’s status, arrival date and inclusion separately. Even where family insurance is available, check that its conditions are met.
Is choosing the cheapest policy enough?
First check the purpose, period, territory and exclusions. An unsuitable cheap product may not provide the protection you need. Compare prices only among suitable options.
