After finding a home, many people treat the tenancy agreement, Wohnungsgeberbestätigung and Anmeldung as one document. They have different functions: the agreement governs the tenancy, the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung confirms moving in, and Anmeldung is the process of registering your address with the authority.

This matters in practice: a signed contract may precede the actual move. Receiving the housing provider's confirmation does not mean registration is complete. Track each stage separately.

What does each document mean?

TermMain functionWho is involved?
MietvertragSets tenancy termsContracting parties
WohnungsgeberbestätigungConfirms actual move-inHousing provider or authorised person
AnmeldungAddress registrationMeldebehörde
MeldebestätigungEvidence of completed registrationRegistration authority

The table helps distinguish the terms. Local service pages may use different forms or wording. Check accepted documents and submission methods on your own city's official page.

The deadline relates to actually moving in

Section 17 BMG generally requires registration within two weeks of moving in. Signing the tenancy agreement or entering Germany does not always happen on that date. Describe the actual circumstances accurately.

Exceptions may apply to temporary stays, existing registration elsewhere or particular accommodation arrangements. Do not assume an exception applies. Tell the local authority the type and duration of your stay and ask what is required.

If appointments are far away, contact the authority early rather than after the deadline. Keep proof of contact and ask what action is needed. A booked appointment is not completed registration.

What should you check in the housing provider's confirmation?

Section 19 BMG requires housing-provider details, the owner's name where relevant, move-in date, address and the names of the people moving in. The housing provider or a person they authorise issues the confirmation.

Compare the name, address and date with your passport and the facts. Ask the issuer to correct errors. Do not alter a signed document in an image or PDF editor. Mark the final version in your folder.

The law also allows electronic confirmation, but check the local procedure. An electronic message does not mean no further step is needed. Keep the identifier or evidence specified by the authority.

Identify whom to ask in advance

The housing provider need not personally be the owner. A property manager or another authorised person may handle it. Clarify who issues confirmation when arranging the tenancy or accommodation; do not leave it at “someone will do it later”.

Explain subletting, employer-provided rooms or staying with relatives openly. A friend's address where you do not live is not an ordinary favour for registration. The evidence must match your actual residence.

Sample request: “Ich bin am [Datum] in die Wohnung eingezogen. Könnten Sie mir bitte die Wohnungsgeberbestätigung für die Anmeldung ausstellen?” Enter the actual date. Do not describe a planned future move as already completed.

What if confirmation is not provided on time?

Section 19 BMG requires prompt notification to the Meldebehörde if confirmation is refused or not received in time for another reason. Waiting indefinitely for the provider is not enough. Record when you asked and the response received.

Explain the situation objectively and ask the authority for the next step. Let it specify how to present the tenancy agreement or other evidence. Do not substitute someone else's document or forge a signature.

The same provision prohibits offering an address for registration when no actual move-in takes place or is intended. Do not use an “address just for paperwork” service. Resolve the problem by explaining your real living situation.

Illustrative example: contract date differs from move-in

Dilfuza signs at the beginning of the month but moves in later. She does not automatically copy the signing date into the confirmation. She checks the actual move-in day with the housing provider and supplies accurate registration details.

She then notices a one-letter surname error. Instead of editing it herself, she requests a corrected confirmation and separately checks what to bring to the local appointment. This fictional example is not a city's definitive document list.

Check the information after registration

Check the name and address on the registration evidence. Organise a copy for later requests and keep the original. Send each organisation the specific proof requested, not your entire document folder.

Anmeldung does not grant immigration residence or work permission. To track those processes separately, use the guide to moving to Germany for workas an overall plan. Follow the responsible authority's instructions for the particular permission.

Questions and answers

Does the tenancy agreement replace the move-in confirmation?

They serve different purposes. Check the local registration requirements. Having a tenancy agreement does not establish that all evidence is complete.

Will my employer register me?

They may help, but agree the task and outcome clearly. Ask the authority about authorisation or personal attendance. HR recording your address does not mean official Anmeldung is complete.

What if the housing provider enters the wrong date?

Explain the facts and request correction. Do not use inaccurate information for convenience. Discuss deadline or evidence problems openly with the Meldebehörde.
