German language course visa: requirements and preparation

Learning German in Germany provides daily practice and can support professional or educational plans. Before choosing a course, define the purpose of your stay: a standalone language course, university preparation, vocational training or qualification recognition may require different residence routes. A standalone intensive course may qualify for a language course visa under Section 16f AufenthG, subject to the relevant requirements.

What is a language course visa?

This permission is for a stay in Germany primarily to study the language intensively under Section 16f(1) AufenthG. A longer course generally involves a national visa followed by the relevant residence permit. The duration follows the course and is up to 12 months. Trips of up to 90 days require a separate assessment of short-stay visa rules.

This is not a standard employment visa. However, a language-course permit under Section 16f allows employed work for up to 20 hours per week. The course remains the main purpose; check the conditions on your document before starting work.

Who is this route for?

Intensive language learning may support the following plans. Choose the visa category according to your actual purpose, not just the course name:

  • Preparing for Ausbildung: if you already have a training place, a Section 16a route with language preparation may be appropriate
  • University or preparatory college: check the study or university-place search route
  • Preparing for skilled employment or an EU Blue Card: the course alone does not create eligibility for an employment permit
  • Qualification recognition: a course linked to recognition may require Section 16d, for example for doctors
  • A standalone intensive German course not preparing for university: check Section 16f requirements

Language learning can be preparation for the next stage. Moving to study, vocational training or work requires a separate application and compliance with the new route; finishing the course is not itself permission.

Key documents and requirements

1. Course admission confirmation

  • A school document stating the location, duration, timetable and in-person format
  • The course generally includes at least 18 lessons per week with daily lessons; evening-only or weekend-only courses are insufficient
  • Evidence of course payment under the school’s terms and the mission’s current checklist

2. Passport and general documents

  • A valid passport with sufficient validity for the visa category
  • Blank pages, application form, photograph and other official checklist documents

3. Financial means (Finanzierungsnachweis)

You must show funding for the entire planned stay. The federal Make it in Germany overview for 2026 gives the following benchmark for a standalone language course:

  • €1,091 net per month. The Tashkent embassy page currently shows a different amount; confirm the requirement for your application before opening an account

Check the checklist for accepted forms of evidence:

  • Blocked account (Sperrkonto) — at €1,091, a 12-month stay requires €13,092. This is your living budget, not a visa or service fee
  • A formal undertaking by a sponsor — Declaration of Commitment (Verpflichtungserklärung)
  • An eligible scholarship meeting the requirements; an informal private sponsor’s letter is not equivalent to formal proof

Health insurance

For a language course visa, suitable health insurance is required. Coverage, duration and start date must suit the stay; choose a policy after checking the requirements.

What should you check in the policy?

  1. Whether it covers a longer language-study stay rather than only a short holiday
  2. Whether the evidence is accepted for the visa category
  3. Exclusions, excesses, limits and how treatment is paid for
  4. Continuous cover from arrival until the course ends or another suitable policy begins

At the start of the stay, one option may be private incoming insurance if its terms are accepted in your case. Entry into statutory health insurance is not automatic; it depends on status and the applicable rules.

Motivation letter

The letter should explain your actual circumstances. Write and sign it yourself, and check the mission’s translation and other requirements:

  • Why you need intensive German study in Germany
  • Why the school, programme and city fit your plans
  • Your professional or educational goals after the course, without invented contracts or promises
  • How you will comply with residence deadlines and the conditions of any subsequent permit

Duration and restrictions

  • Duration follows the course, up to 12 months under this route
  • Employed work up to 20 hours per week; check your document’s conditions
  • Family reunification is not automatic; eligibility and conditions require separate assessment
  • Extensions and changes of purpose require assessment and an application before authorised residence expires

Plan your language-course stay with a clear learning objective and budget, including a reserve for unexpected expenses.

Practical tips

  • When choosing a school, compare price as well as the timetable, format, refund terms and compliance with visa requirements; obtain written confirmation before paying
  • Confirm a suitable insurance policy and its start date
  • Your motivation letter should be personal and truthful, explaining your own plans
  • Check that dates, payments, funding, insurance and the timetable are consistent
